A Mother's Rantings on Teacher Salary Cuts

We had a PTO meeting last night and I realized how un-informed I am as a parent. There are some serious teacher salary cuts being proposed by our school board and I was completely unaware. It's so hard being a mother and having all the responsibilities at home, to even know what else is going on around me. Now, I am a very involved mother. I'm at there school at least 1, if not 2 days a week, but for some reason I was not aware of the politics going on.

This is very frustrating because I want my kids to have a good education and I feel that those teachers who are good will have to look elsewhere to work or get a second or third job. Which in turn will still take away from my children's education because they'll have less time to prep because they're busy working more jobs.
If you're like me and you want to know more. Here is some information that I found:

-Information on the state cuts:

-Information on our specific teacher salary cuts:

-Want to know more? Contact your school board of trustees & ask them:

From what I've read, the state has cut teacher salaries by 4%, why does our district want to cut 10.5%?

Also, why isn't the board listening to the parents? Don't we elect them to speak for us and listen to our voices? Politics!

Sorry this has been my rant session, but I guess I just don't understand all the reasoning behind these proposed decisions & believe me, I'm about to draft my email to the board of trustees. I want a good quality education for my kids and teachers are already paid to little! The message the board is sending is that they don't care!!

Oh, you've struck a raw nerve of mine!! Try being married to a teacher with a masters degree AND 11 years of teaching experience and still have to work part-time because we can't live off of his income!! Ugh. It's so sad that teachers' salaries will ever be a source of debate and a quick fix for bugdet troubles. It's a major flaw in our system. What to do? I don't know if it will ever change.

I agree with you. Why don't politician's cut they pay instead. We don't really need them anyways!

Thank-you for posting this. So many of my friends are teachers here and it is heartbreaking to see what they are having to go through. They love their jobs but when you can't survive on the income, how do you justify keeping it? I think parents need to be more involved for sure.
